Oil for diesel engines differs from those lubricants intended for gasoline engines. A diesel engine runs on lean fuel and is subject to severe thermal loads.

The fuel in such an internal combustion engine burns out very quickly, but not completely. A certain part of it remains in the cylinder block. Waste exhaust contains a lot of soot. Diesel has a high sulfur concentration.

High compression in the combustion chamber leads to gases quickly breaking into the engine crankcase. Because of this, diesel oil oxidizes, its protection and purification properties rapidly deteriorate.

    Any driver wants to buy the best diesel motor oil. However, not all car enthusiasts understand the classifications of lubricants. It is necessary to be able to determine which oil to pour into a diesel engine.


    SAE Specification

    Currently, a variety of oily fluids for a diesel engine are presented in stores. They can be significantly different from each other in terms of their own indicators.

    Motor oil is divided into mineral, synthetic and semi-synthetic. In accordance with the SAE classification, motor oils are divided into types according to their viscosity index. The marking looks like “5w30”.

    The first number indicates the viscosity of the lubricant in winter conditions.

    The second number shows the high temperature viscosity.

    The speed of passage of the oil through the oil channels, the speed of its flow to the contacting parts, the charge consumption of the battery, the level of resistance during the rotation of the crankshaft by the starter directly depend on these parameters.

    It is advisable to opt for diesel oil, which starts at “5w” (up to minus twenty-five), “10w” (up to minus twenty), “15w” (up to minus fifteen). The lower the number, the thinner the lubricant.

    Remember that both mineral and semi-synthetic oils can have the same viscosity parameters. The quality of the oil product does not depend on the viscosity index.


    API specification

    API is a classification developed by the American Petroleum Institute. It subdivides all lubricants according to their performance indicators. This classification has 2 categories:

  • S – motor oil for gasoline engines;
  • C - car oil for diesel engines.
  • Each category is divided into additional groups. What oil is best to fill in a diesel engine? It will be optimal to use lubricant API CF. It can be poured both into naturally aspirated diesel engines and engines with a particulate filter.

    ACEA Specification

    The European auto manufacturing community has put forward its demands regarding the use of motor oils in engines. The ACEA specification divides all oils into 4 groups:

  • A - for internal combustion engines on gasoline;
  • B - for internal combustion engines on a diesel engine;
  • C - for powerful diesel trucks;
  • D - for internal combustion engines on gasoline / diesel, compatible with particulate filters, catalysts.
  • Also, all lubricants are divided into conventional and energy-saving. Oils A1, A5, B1, B5 are considered energy-saving. All other motor oils are classified as ordinary.

    Universal lubricant for gasoline and diesel engines

    There are also universal motor oils. They can be poured into internal combustion engines on gasoline and diesel. These petroleum products comply with API and ACEA standards. However, their marking has some differences from the usual.

    SJ/CF on the grease container indicates that the product can be poured into any internal combustion engine, however, gasoline is recommended. CF / SJ - on the contrary, indicates that a diesel engine is considered recommended (including equipment with particulate filters).

    Practice has shown that the use of this oil in a diesel engine is highly dependent on the characteristics of the fuel, the frequency of replacement. This is due to the fact that universal oil fluids have a reduced alkalinity index, denoted TBN.

    This parameter is greater for those lubricants that are designed specifically for diesel ICEs.

    Multipurpose motor oil

    This problem prompted automakers to carry out additional examinations. Ford experts analyzed the characteristics of lubricants when driving on diesel fuel from Turkey. The sulfur concentration in such fuel is twenty times higher than in Western European fuel.

    The survey involved motor oils of different categories. ACEA A1/B1 lubricant, which is a universal petroleum product, was studied. It is often poured into diesel engines running on good fuel.

    An analysis of the decrease in the alkalinity coefficient when using a diesel engine from Turkey made it possible to establish when a universal car oil ceases to protect the engine from an aggressive environment.

    The experts concluded how much oil should be added to diesel fuel, how often it should be changed. This is ACEA B3 / E3 (if the fuel is of poor quality). It needs to be changed every six thousand kilometers.

    It must be taken into account that the tests were carried out under conditions close to ideal. In reality, lubricant performance deteriorates much faster.

    In domestic conditions, it is optimal to change the oil every four thousand kilometers.


    Energy saving car oil

    The main task of energy-saving lubricants is fuel economy. Low fuel costs help increase the environmental friendliness of the internal combustion engine. The reduction in fuel costs is due to the high-quality lubrication of all parts, which is provided by motor oil for diesel engines.

    The oil must fully protect highly loaded internal combustion engine parts. The higher the temperature in the motor, the thinner the lubricant film. The engine turns easier, but the protection of spare parts from wear is reduced.
